My Recovery Routine After Illness — Learning Not to Rush Back
After shingles I tried to return to normal too fast. Here's the gentler recovery approach that actually worked.
#recovery#rest#shingles#healing
I underestimated recovery time
The rash scabbed over and I declared myself "fine." Two days later the fatigue hit again — hard.
What rushing back cost me
- Pain flare-ups from overactivity
- Sleep disruption
- Extended total recovery time (ironic, since I tried to speed up)
My recovery framework now
Week 1–2: Protect rest
- Reduced work hours where possible
- Short walks only
- Loose, soft clothing over sensitive skin areas
- Follow medication schedule exactly
Week 3–4: Gradual return
- Increase activity by ~10% per day, not 100% overnight
- Monitor pain and energy as feedback — not inconvenience to ignore
Ongoing: Immune support habits
- Sleep priority
- Balanced meals
- Stress reduction (not "elimination" — reduction is realistic)
Recovery checklist
- Clear return-to-work plan with realistic hours
- Follow-up appointment if symptoms persist
- Pain management plan discussed with clinician
- Permission to say "not yet" to social obligations
When to call the doctor during recovery
- Worsening pain after initial improvement
- Signs of infection (fever, spreading redness)
- New neurological symptoms
What I learned
Recovery is part of treatment, not what happens after treatment. Planning for it upfront would have been kinder to my body.
Individual recovery varies. Follow your clinician's guidance.
